As a storyteller, I use representational imagery of plants, animals, and people to evoke emotion-much like a film. My latest series takes this concept literally by transforming old books into works of art.
After moving to Santa Fe, I was inspired by the city’s rich literary culture and abundance of secondhand books. Sourcing discarded books, I repurpose them as canvases, giving them a new life beyond their original purpose.
Each piece begins with a carefully chosen book that relates to the subject-animals for the animal series, plants for the plant series, and a broader selection for portraits. I prepare the book by sealing its contents, creating a textured surface, and layering gesso before painting. The final artwork retains the book’s title, adding an extra narrative element.
Through this process, forgotten books become unique visual stories, inviting viewers to engage with their layered histories in a new way.
